Nikhil and his brother Jai arrived in the village on September 11, 2009, having purchased a new sweet factory.

The two brothers tend to clash over the business, both having different management styles, but on the whole get on and enjoy some cheeky banter.

Nikhil doesn't have his brother's way with the ladies. He starts dating Maisie Wylde but then dumps her when they get too close. We find out Nikhil is a 'late developer' in the bedroom department having previously been left heartbroken.

Maisie leads him to the bedroom and the pair are not seen in the village for several week so she must have shown him a thing or two! They were briefly engaged in january 2011 until Maisie admitted she didn't love him, before leaving Emmerdale with her younger brother Will, leaving Nikhil heartbroken once again.

Rik Markarem

Rik Makarem had roles in Foyle's War and Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood before landing the role of Nikhil Sharma in Emmerdale in 2009.

Rik is a classically trained actor, a graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and his theatre roles include Orsino in William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night and Jesus in The Life of Christ.

He is a keen cyclist and also an accomplished musician.
